Finished 3D printed models are easy to maintain when you use gentle tools and avoid excessive heat, pressure and harsh chemicals. The safest routine is simple: remove dust regularly, support the strongest part when moving the model and keep it away from conditions that can soften or fade the material.
What you need
- A clean, soft makeup brush or camera-lens brush
- A manual air blower
- A dry microfibre cloth
- Cotton buds for accessible recesses
- Cool or lukewarm water for occasional spot cleaning
Avoid stiff brushes, abrasive pads and high-pressure compressed air. Powerful air can loosen small attached parts or drive dust deeper into narrow gaps.
How to remove ordinary dust
- Move the model to a clear table covered with a soft towel.
- Hold it by a broad, strong section rather than an antenna, wing tip or weapon.
- Use a soft brush to lift dust from panel lines and textured surfaces.
- Use a manual blower to move loosened dust away from recesses.
- Wipe the stand and broad smooth areas with a dry microfibre cloth.
Work from the top downward so that dislodged dust does not settle on an area you have already cleaned. A light monthly clean is usually easier and safer than allowing a heavy layer of dust to build up.
Spot-cleaning fingerprints and marks
For a small mark, lightly dampen a soft cloth or cotton bud with cool water. Test an inconspicuous area first, then wipe without scrubbing. Dry the area promptly with a clean cloth.
Do not soak an assembled model. Water can collect inside hollow sections or around joints, labels and painted details. Avoid acetone, alcohol-based cleaners, household sprays and other solvents unless the maker has specifically confirmed that they are safe for the exact material and finish.
Protect PLA models from heat
PLA is widely used for detailed display models, but it can soften or deform in high heat. Do not leave a model in a parked car, beside a heater, directly above electronics that run hot or in a window that receives intense sun for long periods.
A stable indoor shelf or cabinet is ideal. Normal room temperatures are suitable; the important point is to avoid concentrated heat and prolonged direct sunlight.
Handle the model by its strongest section
Before lifting a spacecraft from its stand, identify the main hull or another structurally strong area. Use two hands for large models. Do not carry a long model by one end, and never use antennas, engine nacelles or a display peg as a handle.
If the stand separates from the model, move the two pieces individually. This prevents leverage from placing unnecessary force on the mounting point.
Choose a safe display location
- Leave clearance around wing tips and projections.
- Keep the model away from the edge of a shelf.
- Use a stable surface that does not vibrate.
- Avoid areas where bags, curtains or cleaning tools may catch fine details.
- Use a closed cabinet if dust is a persistent problem.
Long-term storage
Clean the model before storing it. Wrap delicate projections loosely with acid-free tissue, then place the model in a rigid box with cushioning that supports strong sections. Do not let heavy packing material press directly on antennas or thin wings.
Store the stand beside the model rather than connected if the mounting point could be stressed. Keep the box in a dry indoor area with a stable temperature, not in a hot roof space or damp garage.
What if a small part comes loose?
Keep the part and note its original position. Do not force it back into place or apply a large amount of adhesive. Contact the maker for advice when possible, particularly if the finish is painted or the joint is load-bearing. A careful repair is easier when both surfaces remain clean and undamaged.
The simple care routine
Dust gently, handle the central structure, avoid heat and leave enough display clearance. Those four habits prevent most avoidable damage and keep the colour and surface detail visible.
